1924
The Montreal Forum was built on Saint- Catherine and Atwater in 1924. It was the first Arena for the Montreal Canadiens. It took 159 days to build the arena. It originally had a capacity of just under 10,000 people. There were several renovations that took place and by the time the arena closed in 1996, it was a capacity of 17,959. Before the construction of the arena. The area was home to an outdoor hockey rink where guys like Art Ross and Lester Patrick played hockey. These names are now very famous in the hockey world as they have trophies named after them.

1970
In 1924, when the forum was built, it costed 1.5 million dollars. Today, that is roughly 20 million. Which is a bargain for building an arena today. In 1923, Sir Edward Beattie had the idea to build the forum. He wanted a place to play ice hockey on an NHL sized rink.

1997
In April 1996, the Montreal Canadiens played their final home game in the most historic arena in sports history. an NHL record 24 Stanley cups were won in this arena. The arena was aging and the repairs would have been too costly to renovate and reconstruct many broken parts to the building. When the season ended, renovations took place immediately to transform this historic arena into a shopping center. The only thing kept from the building were the Stanley Cup banners, that still hand in the Canadiens current arena, the bell center and, the city decided to keep bleachers. Which are actually still in the forum today.

2000
This picture is taken on the corner of Saint- Catherine and Atwater. In just one year, there were major differences to the building. From here on out the building would go under significant changes that make it look like the building we know of today.

There have been clear and obvious changes since its original opening in 1924. After all the renovations that took place after the 1996 hockey season, there have been additions such as Jillian's which is an arcade and restaurant, the AMC movie theater and, numerous stores. In was in this photo from the year 2000, where the biggest transformation happened.

Today, it is not the outside of the forum that has gone major renovations, but it is the inside. Besides the restaurants and stores that have been added, the original center ice location has been stored. So if you're standing at the center ice logo today, it is the same spot it was from 1924-1996 when the Canadiens played hockey there. The latest addition to the forum was that in 2010, Dawson college added classes to the famous complex. The mall continues to grow and changes keep happening which make it look less and less like it was ever a hockey arena.
